Genders of Cardbots

The genders of certain female-leaning Metal Cardbots is a highly disputed topic among fans and production staff. Beginning with Metal Cardbot S, certain Cardbots were given feminine traits that set them apart from other Cardbots, but official sources have disagreed on what gender to use, if they are used at all. Due to the gender-neutral nature of Korean pronouns, their English pronouns have not been clarified by official material, leaving fans to speculate on how they should be addressed.

Arguments for

Most Cardbots are given masculine appearances and are voiced by male voice actors. Some Cardbots refer to others by explicitly gendered names, such as Shadow X calling Blue Cop ν˜• (hyeong, or β€œbig brother” as used by a male). However, Cardbots such as Cielo and Sky Gallop are voiced by female voice actors, and are given feminine traits such as eyelashes. In the credits of S2E26, Return of Steel, Fleta Z is shown giving flowers to Cielo and Sky Gallop; He was shown giving similar treatment to Vera and Anna in S1E15, A Metal Cardbot from the Sky! and S1E21, Anna's Metal Breath.

Production staff involved with the writing and direction of the series, including OSROCTION director Seoro Oh and assistant director Yujin An, have often anthropomorphized these Cardbots as female.

Beginning with Metal Cardbot W, Tachi was the first Cardbot to be explicitly designed with feminine traits:

…for the head design, since I’m a bit older… I based it on Na Ae-ri β†— from the anime Run, Hani! (a classic from my childhood). So, this is definitely a female character, right?

Arguments against

God Brave Studio toy designer blue_audax, one of the designers for Cardbots in Metal Cardbot S, stated in a Tweet that β€œThere are no female Cardbots in Season 2”.2

In universe, it has not been proven that Cardbots have any gender at all, as Cardbots do not recognize the concept of birth or birthdays.3 In S3E6, Taming the Tank, Blue Cop tells Tigun that he can call himself μ—„λ§ˆ (eomma, mother), despite being masculine in the show.[citation needed]

The English dub of season 1 necessarily refers to Cardbots using he/it pronouns, but usage of both pronouns seems arbitrary[citation needed]. It is yet to be seen how female-leaning Cardbots will be addressed in the English dub of Metal Cardbot S.

Outside of the show, SAMG Entertainment has mentioned in various press releases that the show is targetted primarily to boys age 4-74; it may be possible that executives thought explicitly feminine Cardbots would not be appealing to this demographic.

On the wiki

This section pertains to a cardbot.wiki policy.

The wiki aims to be written in the most natural style for editors and viewers, while not taking a side in the discussion. As such, most Cardbots will be referred to with he/him pronouns; for feminine-leaning Cardbots such as Cielo and Sky Gallop, they/them pronouns will be used.
