Seoro Oh (오서로, aka OSRO) is a South Korean freelance animation director and creator of independent animation studio OSROCTION ↗¹. He is the director of Metal Cardbot, a fan of transforming robots, and takes a particular interest in fluid, shapeshifting animation. He often shares behind-the-scenes content on his Twitter account ↗.

Early life

Seoro Oh was born on November 13, 1990^{(citation needed)}. A shy person when he was young, pursuing animation in college taught him to be come more proactive and confident in his direction. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Chungkang College of Cultural Industries in 2016.²

YouTube Transformers animations

On October 16, 2009, Seoro Oh, under the screen name Osro ↗, began posting Transformers animations on his YouTube channel³. The “Short Flash Transformers” series attracted millions of views and kickstarted his animation career. At the time of writing, his YouTube channel boasts 580,000 subscribers⁴.

Independent animation

Oh has animated and directed many short films. Afternoon Class and (OO) went on to receive multiple awards from film festivals worldwide. He became the first Korean director to win the Lotte Reiniger Promotion Award at the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film, one of the largest animated film festivals in the world.⁵

Professional animation

Oh went on to become a freelance animation director, directing animation for various companies, including TED-Ed ↗. He also produced the pilot animation “ORANGEBACK + HOO-D” for Dalgona Entertainment, a 3D robot animation with designs and art direction that would later inspire Metal Cardbot^{(citation needed)}. ev:youtube|vGRW75HukG8

With a team of artists and producers, he created the independent animation studio OSROCTION in 2020. Their first project was pre-production for Yellow MUZI & Friends, a children’s animated television show contracted by Kako Corp.⁶. Shortly afterward, SAMG Entertainment contracted his company to supervise animation and storyboarding for Metal Cardbot, the first 3D animated series Oh has directed⁷. While most of the character design was decided by SAMG, Oh hopes to someday create a robot story of his own using his own plot and characters.

There are so many things I want to make. After finishing directing ”Metal Cardbot” and [Yellow MUZI & Friends], I feel like my perspective has broadened a lot compared to when I was an independent animation director. My biggest achievement of the past two years was learning what it means to make animation with a lot of people. At the same time, I also have goals on how to improve the problems that have been prevalent in the animation industry. Creatively, I still have many short stories that I want to make, but on the other hand, there are stories that I want to challenge myself with - whether it’s a series, a feature film, or a 2D or 3D action thriller drama. I’m trying to build a foundation step by step so that I can make even one of those dreams come true.
